Achill Island Cycle Loops

Picture
Achill Island, connected by a bridge to County Mayo in the West of Ireland, is an ideal location for a cycling holiday.  Achill is the hub of the West Mayo Cycle Network that includes the new Great Western Greenway and numerous alternative routes throughout the island.  Picnic stops, local pubs and restaurants are dotted along the Achill Cycle Network, which offers breathtaking views of the wild Atlantic coastline.  Achill has a wealth of historic sites and excellent facilities and activities. The island has a long history of human settlement, with megalithic tombs and promontory forts dating back more than 5,000 years.
Grainuaile's Castle, Kildavnet
Kildavnet Castle, a 15th century fortified tower house and home of Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley, is located along Cycle Route 1.

The 19th century Achill Mission Estate in Dugort is on Route 2, and the poignant Deserted Village at Slievemore is on Route 3..

Achill boasts five Blue Flag beaches, Europe’s highest sea cliffs and large tracts of Atlantic blanket bog between the two peaks, Croaghaun and Slievemore, and the majestic Minaun Cliffs of Keel.  Walking and cycling along the quiet lanes and trails is a wonderful way to discover the island’s interior.

The trailhead for the cycle loops is in Keel, just 5km from Achill Bikes' base.  Traffic on the routes is generally light, but can get busy during the holiday season.  The loops are suitable for people with a medium level of fitness.

The minimum gear required is helmet, bike, mobile phone, fluid, snacks and waterproofs.  Services are available throughout the island.
